A Case of Acute Intermittent Porphyria

Abstract

|
An eighteen year old unmarried Korean- girl came to the hospital complaining of intermittent severe abdominal pain, lumbago, and frequent nausea and vomiting of 20 days duration, which were developed a few hours after getting injection of Salvarsan, an arsenicals.
During the hospital stay she had attacks of convulsive seizures and hysteria, and happened to notice that she had portwine colored urine. Examination of the urine revealed that her urine contained excess amount of porphobilinogen through Watson-Schwartz test and the diagnosis of porphyria was confirmed.
The symptoms were controlled with chlorpromazine and discharged.
